How to Host Guests at Home Like a Pro

There’s a special kind of joy that comes with having guests over. Whether it’s friends for the weekend or family for Christmas, welcoming others into your space helps to create fond, lasting memories.

But behind every successful gathering is a bit of thoughtful planning. With the right preparation and a few simple touches, you can make your guests feel right at home.

Hosting Guests

Pre-arrival prep

The foundation of great hosting begins before your guests even step through the door. Take a moment to tidy up and create a welcoming atmosphere. This doesn’t have to mean a full clean, but rather a thoughtful tidy and organisation of common spaces. Clean surfaces, fluff cushions, and make sure nothing is blocking the way. You want your guests to feel at ease the moment they arrive.

If you have time, set up a small welcome area with a basket of essentials: a note with Wi-Fi details, or even a little snack. This small gesture can make guests feel cared for and immediately comfortable.

Guest room essentials

When it comes to the guest room, think of it like a cosy hotel suite. If you're expecting an overnight stay, a fresh set of bedding and a couple of extra blankets will go a long way in making your guest feel comfortable and taken care of.

Don’t forget the little things, like a few towels neatly arranged, a spare toothbrush and perhaps a bottle of water by the bed. If you want to push the boat out, consider investing in a new mattress for your guest room if you’ve got time. A comfortable bed makes a huge difference, especially if your guests will be staying for a few nights. A good night’s sleep is priceless, and they’ll leave feeling more refreshed.

Guest Bedroom

Food and drink

It’s tempting to go overboard and plan an elaborate menu. But simplicity can be just as effective. A light breakfast spread, some easy-to-make lunch and dinner options, plus a few nibbles for evening drinks, should be more than enough.

Consider your guests’ preferences, especially if you know they have dietary restrictions. Having a variety of options, like fresh fruit, cheese and a few homemade or store-bought treats, makes it easy for everyone to help themselves.

Don’t feel pressured to cook a gourmet meal every time. Instead, keep it stress-free with a couple of crowd-pleasers that are easy to prepare, like a pasta dish or a comforting casserole. These dishes are usually even better the next day, so there’s no last-minute rush.

Entertainment and activities

While the company is the main event, offering a few options for entertainment means your guests won’t be left wondering what to do. A good selection of books, board games or perhaps a streaming service with a few films ready to go is a great way to keep things fun and light-hearted.

Keep it low key – your guests might just appreciate the chance to relax and unwind in a cosy corner with a cup of tea or a glass of wine.
